Hello, bookworms, and welcome to my review of Legendborn by Tracy Deonn! I really loved this book and am so excited to talk about it, so let's get started! This review is spoiler-free, so feel free to keep reading even if you haven't read this book yet.
Legendborn begins with Bree grieving after the loss of her mother in a car accident. Bree needs to escape, so she enrolls in a residential program for bright high schoolers at UNC. Then, her first night there, she witnesses a magical attack, throwing her headfirst into a mysterious world of secret societies, Arthurian legends, and flying demons. Bree is convinced that the secret society called "Legendborn" knows how her mother truly died, and she is determined to uncover those secrets. But Bree must decide how much she is willing to risk in order to discover the truth--and whether she will join Legendborn's fight or destroy the society. I absolutely loved this book! It immediately sucked me in and immersed me in its magical, mysterious world. There were so many details and terms, which made the world seem very realistic; my only complaint is that I wish the terms ("Legendborn," "Merlin," etc) had been explained more clearly since it was a bit tricky for me to understand at first. The characters were wonderfully crafted, and I loved how diverse the cast of characters was; this book is full of great representation! Legendborn also discusses important topics like racial inequality and grief after losing someone you love, both of which protagonist Bree deals with frequently in the book. The magic in this book was so cool, and the plot twists were fantastic--one of them made me gasp and gape at the page! Bree is a main character whom you will root for until the end; she's a strong girl who fights for what she believes in, and I admire her grit and stubbornness. I also enjoyed reading about the mysterious and brooding Selwyn Kane. It was interesting to learn more about him throughout the book, and I liked how he and Bree were both similar and contrasting in various ways. This was an amazing start to this new series, and I'm so eager to read the next book when it comes out! I can't recommend this book enough, and I hope that you'll pick it up and give it a read! Thank you so much for reading my review of Legendborn. I gave this book Four Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. I especially recommend this book for anyone looking for a diverse, magical book with amazing world-building!

Hi, bookworms, and welcome to my merry book review of What Light by Jay Asher! This was the first of many books on my holiday TBR, and it was a great one to start off the holiday reading season! This book will definitely becoming a yearly Christmas read. It gave me all the best Christmas vibes and was short, sweet, and adorably festive. So without further ado, let's dive into my review! (Warning: this review does have some spoilers in it.)
Sierra's family runs a Christmas tree farm in Oregon, so every year she packs her bags to leave behind her life in California and go sell Christmas trees during the holiday season. She always misses her life and friends in California while she's in Oregon, and vice versa while in California. But something is different this year, because Sierra meets Caleb, a kind boy who made a huge mistake years ago that he's reminded of every day due to his ruined reputation. But Sierra manages to see past Caleb's mistakes and becomes determined to help him find forgiveness and redemption. First off, I loved the Christmas tree farm setting in this book! It reminded me a lot of the setting of one of the short stories in the My True Love Gave to Me anthology (which I'm actually doing a reread of currently!). I liked reading about Sierra's job at the Christmas tree farm, which was described with just enough detail that I could vividly imagine it. Also, I really want to try making one of Sierra's "cheap peppermint mochas" (coffee + hot cocoa + candy cane); it sounds very tasty! I also loved Sierra's friends. They seemed really fun and supportive, and I wish we'd gotten to read more about them. I'm not completely sure how I feel about Sierra and Caleb's romance. They were very cute together, and Caleb seems like a really nice guy. And while, on one hand, I thought it was kind and openminded for Sierra to see past Caleb's mistakes and not judge him by his past, I also felt like she wasn't being very careful when pursuing him, even though she knew the rumors about him possibly being dangerous. I feel like she should have used at least a little more caution; I didn't think it was particularly wise for her to be spending time alone with him when she barely knew him. Also, it seemed like her parents were pretty lenient with letting her spend time with Caleb even though they knew the rumors about him, too. However, I did think Sierra was kind in her willingness to look around Caleb's past mistakes and give him a chance. I just feel like it could have been conducted in a safer, more cautious manner. But their romance was very cute. I liked how generous and pleasant Caleb was, and Sierra's faith and confidence in him was admirable. Overall, I thought this book was sweet, adorable, and festive. It was a short read, but I enjoyed it. It got me into the Christmas spirit and was a great book to start off my holiday TBR. I recommend it to anyone looking for a short but sweet holiday read! I gave this book Four Stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. |
